Wave-Point™ Technology

Patented drilling solutions for higher feed rates and longer tool life.

Cutwell engineers developed Wave-Point™ Technology to solve the drilling challenges inherent to highly engineered carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) used in Aerospace manufacturing. Other drills on the market have to run at feeds much slower than Wave-Point because if they push the feed they will push out (delaminate) the carbon fibers on exit. The Wave-Point, on the other hand, cuts the fibers in steps as the point breaks through, and the higher feed rate allows the tool to “hold onto” the fibers as they cut – essentially pulling them into the tool vs the other tool designs that push the fibers away as they exit the material.

This innovative tool design was the result of our extensive aerospace experience, including a deep understanding of hole quality, tolerances and tool life when drilling CFRP materials.

Wave-Point™ technology–coupled with an exclusive diamond coating–enables higher operating speeds, longer tool life, and helps cut time out of the manufacturing process while improving quality. The tool is a proven performer, drilling both CFRP and CFRP+metal stacks in aerospace and defense structures and assemblies. Common stacks include CFRP/AL, CFRP/Ti, among other combinations.

Tapered Reamers

Cutwell Tapered Reamers are ground from solid carbide and finished with high performing PVD coatings. They are used widely across the automotive, aerospace and firearms industries, among many others. Our unique designs boast some of the highest feed rates in the industry, coupling high productivity with tight tolerance precision.

These custom-designed tapered reamers enable extremely efficient cycle times, producing very accurate holes with a glassy smooth finish. With an emphasis on product quality and feed rates, the tool spends less time in the cut resulting in longer tool life and excellent throughput.

Compression Routers

Precision cutting for composites and woodworking.

Used for machining challenging laminated and layered materials such as carbon fiber, fiberglass and wood, our solid carbide, CVD diamond coated compression style endmills have bi-directional flutes that push the top and bottom of the material together to minimize delamination and burrs.

Common applications for Cutwell Compression Routers include machining, trimming, routing and pocketing difficult materials with confidence. Our custom designs ensure excellent tool life and clean edges to eliminate time-consuming secondary finishing processes.
